The FDA will publish final rules that represent the first major update for the 20-year-old Nutrition Facts Label and related Servings Sizes, on May 27, 2016. Changes to the current nutrition labeling requirements incorporate the most recent nutrition and public health research, and attempt to improve how nutrition information is presented to consumers. The areas for revision are setting Daily Values for nutrition labeling, definitions of carbohydrates and dietary fiber; prominence of calories; and mandatory and optional labeling of individual nutrients. These changes reflect current dietary intakes and recommendations and will trigger changes in most food labels — estimated to be over 800,000 labels -- impacting nutrition claims on packaging and the consumer's understanding of foods using a new format that now includes a declaration of "Added Sugar."

A clear understanding of the changes and how manufacturers' current labels are impacted is a necessity. Accommodating the changes requires a comprehensive process that includes an analysis of the format and nutrition information with the new rules to help consumers understand the nutritional contribution of foods, and creating the best strategy to effectively communicate to consumers the changes to nutrition information on your labels.

This webcast will provide an overview of the required changes and opportunities and challenges related to food product formulation and reformulation and consumer messaging and education.
