Schedule:
April 16th 12pm Central Time: Earth Day 2024 (April 22nd) Plastics vs Planet: The race to reduce plastics for the sake of human and planetary health
Description: To commemorate both Earth Month and Earth Day (April 22nd) the US Plastics Pact will share progress vs plastic reduction goals and provide guidance on what the science of food community can do compete in the race to end plastics.
In honor of Earth Month, join us for a Fireside with Emily Tipaldo, the Executive Director of the US Plastics Pact, for a deep dive into the pressing issue of "Plastics vs. Planet." The timing couldn't be more pivotal as recent data points to a stark escalation in plastic pollution, with more than 8 million tons of plastic waste making its way into our oceans annually—a figure both shocking and a call for urgent action.
· We'll uncover groundbreaking solutions and the power of collective action in confronting the scourge of plastic pollution directly.
· With insights into the latest plastic recycling figures, which highlight the need for immediate intervention, and the ambitious targets of the US Plastics Pact—aiming for 50% of plastic packaging to be effectively recycled or composted by 2025.
· We’ll also shed light on sustainable packaging's transformative role within the science of food community and illustrate how united community efforts can instigate substantial environmental change.
Join us as we confront some of the harsh realities around plastic waste: from the fact that ONLY 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled, to the way plastics are now found at the deepest points of our oceans and even within our own bodies.
Speaker: Emily Tipaldo, US Plastics Pact
Moderator: Dr Lara Ramdin, Upcycled Foods Inc.
